New Edinburgh-Lindenlea-Beechwood Village is a close-knit, dynamic community known for its beautiful trees and friendly residents. It is one of the oldest neighbourhoods in Ottawa. The communities are located in Ottawa East and are found where the Rideau River meets the Ottawa River. Lindenlea is one of the first planned communities in Ottawa and was established in 1918 by urban planner Thomas Adams. Thomas McKay, a prominent builder of the Rideau Canal, bought the New Edinburgh land in 1829 and named it after his hometown of Edinburgh, Scotland. The neighbourhood is home to Rideau Hall, the Governor General of Canada's Residence, and 24 Sussex Drive, the Prime Minister's Residence. Over three-quarters of the neighbourhood is primarily English speaking with the rest speaking French or another language.
